Help and support

The best protection from scams is to be aware of them. Scams can be encountered online, at your door, regular mail, email, and social media or over the phone (calls and SMS).

Be alert to offers that seem too good to be true and never send money to a person or an organisation unless you have established their identity and contact details are valid (by contacting them via the details you have looked in the phone book or independently online).

Most of us receive many scams each year, occasionally when you are in a hurry, on holiday or focusing on something else you may get caught out. There is no shame in it - scammers are clever and are constantly changing their methods to make it difficult for you to recognise a scam as it is happening. If you've lost money to a scam or given out your personal details to a scammer, you're unlikely to get your money back. However there are steps you should take straight away to limit the damage and protect yourself from further loss.

The following pages will help you protect your personal information and limit the loss of money as much as possible.

If you see a scam - report it and help us warn others of the scammer’s tricks.
