WA drivers targeted in latest PayPal scam

Consumer Protection is warning WA drivers not to respond to a scam email inviting them to renew their licence via PayPal.

The Department of Transport has received reports of their customers receiving a fake email from PayPal asking recipients to renew their drivers licence by following a link provided in the email itself.  Customers are then asked to provide their name, address, mother’s maiden name and credit card details.

The Department of Transport does not use PayPal for payments and never asks customers for their personal details via email.

WA ScamNet advises those who receive this email to ignore it and delete it immediately.

This is known as a phishing scam where scammers attempt to obtain your personal and financial details in order to commit credit card fraud and steal money from your account.

Clicking on links within a scam email can also automatically download spyware or malware to your computer or device which gives the scammers access. Carefully assess any email which invites you to click on a link and ensure it is genuine before taking any action.

Genuine Government invoices should be paid using their recommended payment methods as set out on their official website. Search for these websites independently from any emails you suspect may be fake.
